Saskatchewan Monthly Construction Update August 2026 Edition

The Saskatchewan Monthly Construction Update (MCU) highlights a selection of infrastructure projects underway across the province. The series provides an inside look at work in progress, the collaboration involved and the benefits these projects deliver for Saskatchewan people and communities.

Select construction projects have reached substantial completion, including the construction of a new two-bay fire cache in Lower Fishing Lake and expansion of the fire cache in La Ronge, allowing the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency to continue to provide support during the wildfire season.

"Keeping the public up to date on Saskatchewan's infrastructure investments remains an important priority for our government," SaskBuilds and Procurement Minsiter Sean Wilson said. "By sharing these stories and project updates, we are highlighting world class Saskatchewan companies like PCL and Quorex that are working on projects locally. Their expertise and hard work are helping build a strong and steady Saskatchewan for generations to come."

The July edition focused on both the Grenfell Long-Term Care Home and Regina Correctional Centre Building Rehabilitation projects.

The August edition takes a closer look at two Saskatoon projects:

• Saskatoon City Hospital Acute Care; and
• Saskatoon Complex Needs Facility.

Saskatoon City Hospital Acute Care 

The Saskatoon City Hospital Acute Care project responds to the growing demand for acute care services in Saskatoon while providing more appropriate and accessible settings for outpatient care.

The purpose of the project is to add 109 acute inpatient beds in the hospital by relocating certain outpatient programs and community care services, currently located at Saskatoon City Hospital, into the community in renovated leased space at Market Mall through a phased approach.

This consists of 60 new Acute Medicine beds, 22 new Acute Rehabilitation beds, 12 new Acquired Brain Injury beds and 15 new High Acuity beds.

"It is exciting to see major progress happening at Saskatoon City Hospital," Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill said. "With 40 medicine beds already open and another 69 acute care beds coming online, this expansion will ensure patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time."

Construction at Market Mall is nearly 80 per cent complete.

Work in the mall is staged by area, with various scopes complete, nearing completion or in progress. These activities include data infrastructure, interior finishes, millwork and progress made on mechanical and electrical work.

"The progress we have made to date reinforces the value of investing in spaces designed around patient needs," Saskatchewan Health Authority Integrated Saskatoon Health Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Mark Fenton said. "We remain committed to advancing initiatives that enhance accessibility and connection, strengthen the patient experience and create more opportunities for healing in the appropriate environment."

"The progress of the Acute Care Expansion at Saskatoon City Hospital is an exciting milestone for our hospital and the communities we serve," Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation CEO Steve Shannon said. "As construction continues, we are seeing the vision for increased acute care become a reality. In addition to the 109 new beds, the project is creating the capacity, equipment and resources needed to provide patients with access to the care they need closer to home. With the support of our donors, we are proud to see this important investment taking shape and the positive impact it will have on patients, families, and health care teams across Saskatchewan."

Construction commenced in November 2025 and completion is anticipated in early 2027.

The project is in response to one of the Government of Saskatchewan's (GOS) commitments to enhance emergency, critical and acute care services in the province.

Saskatoon Complex Needs Facility

Operations continue at the Saskatoon Complex Needs Facility as the structure undergoes interior and exterior renovations.

The project has reached approximately 80 per cent construction completion. Completed work to date includes new client washrooms, accessibility upgrades, installation of a sprinkler system and landscaping improvements.

"Strengthening public safety requires compassionate and effective responses for people experiencing a crisis," Community Safety Minister Michael Weger said. "The success we are seeing from the facilities in Regina and Saskatoon shows that connecting individuals to appropriate care not only supports better outcomes for those in need, but also helps police focus on their core responsibilities and contributes to safer Saskatchewan communities."

In October 2023, GOS announced funding for 30 new spaces between two facilities in Regina and Saskatoon to enhance community safety by providing a safe and secure place for individuals struggling with addictions to stabilize under medical supervision. Saskatoon City Council granted approval to allow the Saskatoon Complex Needs Facility to operate permanently in this location, subject to additional renovations required to meet building code.

Complex needs facilities provide an alternative to holding intoxicated individuals in police cells with limited medical assistance or in a hospital emergency department. 

The facility is located at the former Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority building at 1701 Idylwyld Drive North.

"Quorex Construction appreciates the opportunity to have worked with the Ministry of SaskBuilds and Procurement to provide Tenant Improvements at the Saskatoon Complex Needs Facility that we hope improves the facility to better provide services and support to members within our community."

Project planning started in March 2025 followed by the design phase in September 2025. Construction began in February 2026 and remains active with completion anticipated in fall 2026.

• A single leased space was obtained to maintain both Geriatric Evaluation and Management and Pre-Admission Clinic outpatient services in one location. Based in Market Mall, the new space benefits from proximity to a range of established health care providers, creating a natural opportunity for individuals to access additional health care services.
• Renovations at the Saskatoon Complex Needs Facility continue while the facility remains operational, creating unique challenges and requiring coordination between the Ministry of SaskBuilds and Procurement, the contractor and facility staff.

The 2026-27 Provincial Budget delivers a capital budget in Saskatchewan of $4.3 billion, one of the largest total capital budgets in Saskatchewan's history.
